This circular walk of moderate length takes in three of the special Hundred Parishes noted for their rural heritage and offers good views from the high ground around the Cambridgeshire and Essex border. We take a short train ride from Cambridge to our start-point at Great Chesterford. After leaving the village we cross open fields to Linton, which we enter passing a small zoo. Alas, the famous Linton Travel Tavern where Alan Partridge once resided for 182 days is entirely fictional. However, The Crown tavern is real, so we will enjoy a drink there prior to continuing on to our lunch spot in the water-meadow on the banks of the diminutive River Granta at Hildersham. From there we follow green lanes past greenhouses and return to Great Chesterford, passing by its many pretty cottages (and if time allows, maybe visiting one of its pubs) before catching the train back to Cambridge.
